Lagos Orders Immediate Waste Evacuation After Sanitation

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources in Lagos, Tokunbo Wahab, has directed operational teams across the state to ensure the immediate evacuation of all waste generated during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise.

He gave the directive in a post on X on Sunday, stating that the government remains committed to achieving a flood-free Lagos, especially as the rainy season intensifies.

According to Wahab, he has been receiving regular updates from teams on the ground and emphasised that the same level of effort used in mobilising residents for the sanitation exercise must be matched with prompt waste clearance.

“We are actively monitoring the situation across Lagos State and have directed our operational teams to ensure that every single waste generated during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise is cleared in record time,” he said.

He noted that multiple agencies are involved in the exercise, including the Lagos Waste Management Authority, ministry enforcement units, private sector partners, and local government councils, all working to remove waste from streets across the state.

Wahab explained that the initiative goes beyond surface cleaning, with attention also focused on clearing drainage systems, roadsides, and canals to discourage illegal dumping and minimise flood risks.

“We are clearing the drains simultaneously because this is the only sure path to securing our city against flooding as the rains continue to intensify. A clean environment is our first and most effective line of defence,” he stated.

The commissioner urged residents to adopt consistent environmental hygiene practices, stressing that achieving a flood-free Lagos requires sustained collective effort.

He also commended residents who participated in the sanitation exercise, encouraging continued cooperation in maintaining a cleaner and safer environment.
