Truck Crash Kills Pedestrian, Motorcyclist in Lagos

A pedestrian and a motorcyclist have lost their lives in a fatal accident involving a truck along the Badagry Expressway in Lagos State.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday by its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq.

According to the agency, the crash occurred around the Iyana-Iba Flyover inward the main gate of Lagos State University.

Preliminary investigations showed that a heavily loaded bucket truck travelling at high speed from the Volkswagen area toward Badagry first struck and killed a pedestrian.

LASTMA said the driver failed to stop after the initial collision and continued driving.

The agency explained that a motorcyclist later attempted to pursue the truck alongside another individual in an effort to force the driver to stop.

However, the situation reportedly turned tragic when the truck rammed into the motorcycle during the chase, killing the rider instantly.

The accompanying passenger survived the incident unharmed.

LASTMA officials later arrived at the scene and evacuated the trapped body of the motorcyclist from beneath the truck.

The truck driver was arrested and handed over to police officers and officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps for investigation.

Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki described the crash as a painful reminder of the dangers of reckless driving and excessive speeding.
