The Lagos State Ministry of Tourism Arts and Culture, in partnership with the Lagos State Safety Commission, has conducted a one-day safety sensitisation programme aimed at improving emergency preparedness and crisis response among its workforce.
The training, held on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at the ministry’s conference room, brought together management and staff for an intensive session focused on building safety awareness, reducing workplace risks, and enhancing the ability to respond effectively to emergencies.
In her opening remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Bopo Oyekan-Ismaila, represented by the Director of Administration and Human Resource, Taoreed Dosunmu, underscored the importance of integrating safety into everyday activities.
“A strong safety culture is essential for preventing accidents, safeguarding lives, and improving workplace productivity,” Oyekan-Ismaila said.
She further stressed that maintaining a safe environment is a shared responsibility, urging staff to remain vigilant and proactive in identifying potential hazards.
During the session, the Director of Safety Training and Sensitisation at the commission, Oluwatosin Sobola, provided an overview of safety principles and highlighted the roles of key emergency response agencies within the state.
She identified agencies such as the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service as critical first responders, emphasising the importance of contacting the appropriate service during emergencies.
Sobola also shared practical guidance on safety practices across different environments, including the workplace, roads, and homes. She highlighted common risks such as physical hazards, electrical faults, and emergency-related threats, while outlining preventive measures to minimise exposure.
These measures included proper handling of equipment, avoiding overloaded electrical outlets, ensuring that emergency exits remain accessible, and maintaining good housekeeping standards to prevent slips and falls.
She encouraged participants to prioritise early detection of hazards, promptly report unsafe conditions, and strictly adhere to established safety guidelines.
In addition, staff were advised to remain alert in their daily activities, adopt defensive driving practices, and maintain safety-conscious habits at home as part of a broader effort to reduce risk and enhance overall well-being.
