The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has confirmed the temporary closure of Terminal 3 at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport following an electrical spark that caused smoke within the facility.
In a statement, the agency explained that the incident occurred in an operational office at about 14:05 hours, leading to a brief disruption in activities.
FAAN noted that its Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Services (ARFFS) responded swiftly, bringing the situation under control and preventing further escalation.
As a precautionary measure, all flights scheduled to operate from Terminal 3 were redirected to Terminal 2, while technical teams commenced electrical maintenance to ensure all systems are functioning properly before reopening the terminal.
The authority assured passengers and stakeholders that safety remains a top priority and that operations will resume once all necessary checks have been completed.
The latest development comes just weeks after a separate fire incident affected parts of the airport in February.
Speaking on that earlier incident, FAAN Managing Director, Olubunmi Kuku, said preliminary findings suggested the fire originated from the ground floor of Terminal 1, where offices and a restaurant are located, before spreading upward.
She added that although some individuals sustained minor injuries during the incident, no lives were lost.
