The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a four-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding the immediate implementation of a newly approved salary structure for university lecturers nationwide.
The union’s president, Christopher Piwuna, announced the deadline during a public lecture at Sa’adu Zungur University, Yuli Campus in Bauchi State.
According to Piwuna, the countdown takes effect immediately, with a warning that failure to act within the stipulated time could trigger a strong response from the union.
“We have issued a four-day ultimatum from today to the Federal Government to begin the payment of the newly approved salary structure. Failure to comply will attract a strong response from the union,” he said.
He explained that the demand is aimed at improving lecturers’ welfare, noting that poor remuneration has contributed to brain drain and a decline in the quality of higher education in Nigeria.
Piwuna also lamented the government’s history of inconsistent implementation of agreements, which has often led to disputes and industrial actions.
Observers say the ultimatum could heighten tensions between ASUU and the government, raising the possibility of another nationwide strike if the demands are not met within the deadline.
The union has a long-standing record of strikes in pursuit of its demands actions that have repeatedly disrupted academic calendars in public universities and affected millions of students.
