The Abia State Government has conveyed its condolences following the death of Kelechi Ejiofor, a truck driver who succumbed to injuries sustained in a shooting incident involving a soldier at the Uratta Timber Market.
In an official statement released on Monday, the Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, stated that the government has begun engaging with the military high command to ensure that a comprehensive, transparent, and unbiased investigation is carried out to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“We wish to assure the family of the deceased and the general public that justice will not only be pursued but will be seen to be done.
“Any officer found culpable will face the full weight of disciplinary and legal consequences.
“The government urges residents to remain calm, law-abiding and peaceful as efforts are intensified to get to the root of this unfortunate incident,” the government said.
The government also reiterated its commitment to upholding the rule of law, safeguarding lives and property, and protecting the fundamental rights of citizens.
Reports indicate that Ejiofor died on Monday at a medical facility in Aba, where he had been receiving treatment for gunshot wounds sustained during the incident.
