Troops Repel Early Morning ISWAP Attack in Yobe

Troops of the Nigerian Army have successfully repelled an attempted attack by suspected members of the ISWAP along the Maiduguri–Damaturu road in Yobe State, forcing the insurgents to retreat.

The development was disclosed by counter-insurgency and security expert Zagazola Makama in a post shared on X.

According to Makama, the incident occurred at about 4:30 a.m. on April 26, when troops of the 233 Battalion stationed at Tango 4 location detected the insurgents advancing toward their position near Kukareta in Damaturu Local Government Area.

He explained that the attackers were heavily mobilised, riding on approximately six gun trucks and several motorcycles, and were sighted about one kilometre from the military position.

The troops reportedly responded swiftly, deploying a combination of direct and indirect firepower to counter the advance. The response overwhelmed the attackers, forcing them to retreat in disarray.

“The terrorists fled the area under heavy fire from the troops,” he said.

Following the engagement, troops conducted further operations to sweep the area, although no significant items were recovered during the exploitation phase.

Makama added that security forces have since heightened vigilance in the area, intensifying patrols and surveillance to deter any further attempts by the insurgents.
