The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the arrest of one of its officers, Nuhu Usman, in connection with the fatal shooting of a suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State.
The incident occurred on Sunday when police operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command responded to a report from the Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele Expressway.
According to police accounts, the suspect had earlier been apprehended by members of a transport union while attempting to waybill a parcel that reportedly contained a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.
Authorities said that while officers were in the process of taking the suspect into custody, the team leader, ASP Usman, discharged his firearm in breach of established operational guidelines. The action resulted in the death of the suspect.
Following the incident, the police hierarchy ordered immediate disciplinary steps, including the transfer of the officer and his team to Abuja for further investigation.
“The leadership of the Nigeria Police Force has directed the immediate transfer of the officer and his team to Force Headquarters, Abuja, where they will face the Force Disciplinary Committee for summary disciplinary measures and prosecution.
“The Inspector-General of Police extends his condolences to the family of the deceased and assures them that justice will be served in accordance with the law. He further urges members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding as the disciplinary and legal processes take their course,” the statement read.
The case has drawn attention to operational conduct within the police force, with authorities reiterating their commitment to accountability and adherence to professional standards.
