Troops Neutralise IED in Niger, Avert Attack

Troops operating in Niger State have uncovered and safely neutralised an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) placed along a key roadway, averting a potential threat to both civilians and security personnel.

The update was shared on Friday via X by security analyst Zagazola Makama.

According to the report, the mission was conducted by troops under Operation SAVANNAH SHIELD as part of an ongoing offensive along the Wawa–Babana road in Borgu Local Government Area.

Personnel involved in the operation were drawn from the 22 Brigade Sector 1 of Operation Safe Secure Support (OPSS), working in coordination with the 221 Battalion. They were said to be on patrol at about 10:00 a.m. on March 25.

While inspecting a bridge that had earlier been damaged by an IED blast, the troops identified another concealed explosive device in the area.

As part of their response, the soldiers created a temporary alternative route to bypass the damaged section and continued their advance along the corridor.

Further along the route toward Luma, an additional IED was discovered.

The explosive device was subsequently recovered and safely detonated by an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team.
