Residents Deny Mass Exodus From Sokoto Community

Some residents of the Bargaja community in Sokoto State’s Isa Local Government Area have dismissed reports of a mass exodus from the town due to ongoing security concerns.

Initial reports suggested that people were leaving in large numbers following frequent attacks in the area.

However, a local resident told NAN on Monday that the movement was not as widespread as social media videos and reports had claimed.

The source, who asked to remain anonymous, noted that while some had started to leave, “however, with the presence of army personnel and other security operatives, many had rescinded their decision.”

Malam Altine Guyawa, a local commentator, confirmed that bandits had attacked the community on Saturday, leading some residents to consider relocating as a way to stay safe.

Guyawa mentioned that residents and local vigilantes have successfully managed such surprise attacks before, and the arrival of security forces has further strengthened their defenses.

Another anonymous source shared that the community has faced several banditry incidents where security teams and locals “confronted the bandits and both sides suffered casualties, leading to fear among some residents.”

Meanwhile, a security official indicated that military troops recently clashed with a group of bandits attempting to attack Bargaja and nearby villages in the Isa LGA.
The source added that the military’s quick response team drove back the attackers and reassured residents who were thinking about leaving.

He explained that after these discussions, many decided to stay, suggesting that the images on social media likely showed the few who had left earlier.

“The action has demonstrated the effective deterrence and pro-activeness of the Nigerian Army operatives who successfully averted an attack on the villages; the situation at present is stable and under control,” the source said.

Additionally, the Sokoto Police Command, through spokesperson Mr. Ahmad Rufa’i, has promised a thorough investigation into the matter and will provide an official update to the press soon.
