The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has finished its coordinated response to a fire that broke out at the Jos Terminus Market.
The agency shared this update in a statement on its official page on March 15, 2026.
According to NEMA, the fire started just before 10 p.m. on Saturday, March 14, in a section of the market within the Jos North Local Government Area.
A joint assessment by NEMA and other emergency teams following the incident revealed that several temporary stalls and lock-up shops were either partially or completely destroyed.
Initial findings suggest that a power surge may have been the cause of the blaze.
Emergency teams, including the Federal and Plateau State Fire Services, arrived with fire engines and managed to control the flames before they could spread further into the market.
Fortunately, there were no reports of deaths or serious injuries from the fire.
During the operation, Bintu Wana, the Head of NEMA’s Jos Operations Office, expressed the agency’s sympathy on behalf of Director-General Zubaida Umar to the affected traders.
“The Head of NEMA, Jos Operations Office, Hajiya Bintu Wana, who led the NEMA, also conveyed the sympathy of the Director-General of NEMA, Mrs Zubaida Umar, to the market leadership and traders affected by the incident, particularly those who lost their shops and sources of livelihood,” the statement read.
A wide range of organizations assisted in the response and damage assessment, including the Plateau State Emergency Management Agency, the police, the army, the NSCDC, and the Red Cross, along with local vigilantes and community volunteers.
Plateau State Government officials and market leaders praised the quick action of the emergency services, noting that their rapid intervention significantly limited the damage.
