At least nine people have been killed following a fresh attack in Benue State, as violence continues to affect communities in the region.
The incident occurred on Holy Saturday when suspected armed attackers invaded the Mbalom-Mbatsada-Agana community in Gwer Local Government Area. Reports indicate that the assailants stormed the village in the evening, unleashing violence on residents.
Confirming the development, the Chairman of Gwer Local Government Area, Timothy Adi, disclosed that one individual was critically injured and is currently receiving medical treatment.
He explained that the attack took place between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. and described it as a brutal assault on the community. According to him, security agencies had earlier received warnings about a possible attack.
He added that he contacted the state Commissioner of Police, Ifeanyi Enemari, who visited the area and deployed security personnel to restore calm, noting that “the area is peaceful at the moment.”
Reacting to the incident, Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, condemned the killings, describing them as unacceptable and barbaric.
