The Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) has been thrown into mourning following the discovery of the body of a 100-level student near the institution’s North Gate.
The deceased student, identified as Favour Olaniyi, was studying in the Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics before the tragic incident.
According to reports, his lifeless body was discovered inside a bush close to the university gate under circumstances that have raised suspicions of possible suicide.
An empty bottle containing a substance suspected to be a harmful herbicide was reportedly recovered at the scene after the body was found.
The incident sparked shock and sadness among students and residents around the campus environment, with many seen gathered in groups discussing the development.
Confirming the incident, the Director of Corporate Communication and Protocol of FUTA, Adegbenro Adebanjo, expressed sadness over the loss and disclosed that the family of the deceased had already been notified.
He also stated that the university management is cooperating fully with security agencies investigating the matter.
According to him, officials of the Students Affairs Division have been mobilised to provide counselling and emotional support to students who may have been affected by the incident.
He said, “The Students Affairs Division, FUTA, has always reiterated its readiness and willingness to provide support for students who may be battling any issues and will continue to do so.
“Students are encouraged to take advantage of the availability of such counselling and guidance when they are faced with any issues on and off campus.”
Also speaking on the development, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ondo State Command, Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed that an investigation into the incident had commenced.
According to him, detectives who visited the scene did not observe visible signs of violence on the deceased’s body.
He said, “The corpse has been deposited at the mortuary for preservation and further examination, while investigations to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident have commenced.”
