OAU Defeats FUTA to Win National STEM Competition

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has been crowned overall winner of a national Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) competition after defeating Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) in the grand finale.

The university disclosed the development in a statement released on Tuesday by its Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, noting that the competition featured leading universities from across Nigeria.

According to the statement, “The competition involved a rigorous selection process that tested participants’ knowledge, innovation, and problem-solving abilities in STEM-related disciplines.

“OAU advanced to the final stage alongside FUTA after outperforming other competing institutions during earlier rounds of the contest.”

The grand finale was described as highly competitive, with both institutions demonstrating strong levels of creativity, teamwork, and technical expertise throughout the contest.

At the conclusion of the event, OAU emerged as the top-performing institution, surpassing FUTA to claim the national title.

Reacting to the achievement, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adebayo Simeon Bamire, said the victory reflects the university’s enduring commitment to academic excellence.

“This landmark achievement reaffirms our enduring legacy in science and technology education, research, and innovation,” Bamire said.

He added that the students’ performance showcased their discipline and ingenuity, as well as the dedication of the institution’s academic staff.

“It is a proud moment in the history of our university and a demonstration that we remain a pacesetter in STEM education, research, and innovation,” he stated.

Also reacting, the Global President of the Great Ife Alumni Association, Leye Falode, commended the students for their resilience and teamwork.

“This victory is a product of rigorous preparation and the enabling academic environment provided by the university. Our students have once again shown they can excel at the highest level,” he said.

The university management also praised the team for bringing honour to the institution and acknowledged the support of stakeholders who contributed to the success, reaffirming its commitment to nurturing talent and sustaining academic excellence.
