Benue Crisis: 19 Abducted Victims Rescued After Communal Clash

Nineteen people abducted during a violent confrontation between communities in Benue State have been rescued following a coordinated operation by security forces.

The unrest involved residents of Ukpute in Oju Local Government Area and Adiko in Obi Local Government Area. According to reports, the crisis began after a woman from Ukpute was allegedly attacked and seriously injured while working on her farm. The incident quickly sparked outrage within the community, leading to retaliatory actions by some youths.

What started as a localized dispute soon escalated, resulting in the abduction of 19 individuals and heightened tension across both communities.

In a bid to contain the situation, the chairmen of the affected local governments—Ominyi Jackson Adah and Silas Odeh—moved swiftly to mobilise security personnel. The joint effort, which included soldiers and police officers, was aimed at restoring order and preventing further violence.

Officials later confirmed that the operation was successful, with all abducted victims safely rescued and reunited with their families.

As part of ongoing peace efforts, both council leaders visited Ukpute community in Ainu Ette. During the visit, they engaged residents in discussions aimed at easing tensions and encouraging reconciliation. They also warned against any form of reprisal, stressing that further violence would only deepen the crisis.

Amid the aftermath, the Omi Ny’Igede Youth Wing Development Association raised concerns over the condition of displaced residents. The group called on the Benue State Emergency Management Agency and the National Emergency Management Agency to urgently provide relief materials.

According to the association, many affected individuals are currently struggling with a lack of basic necessities, including food, shelter, and access to medical care, following the disruption caused by the violence.

Communal clashes in the state are often rooted in long-standing disputes over land ownership and boundary issues. Authorities have repeatedly emphasized the importance of dialogue, mediation, and early intervention as key strategies to prevent such conflicts from escalating.

For now, security personnel continue to maintain a visible presence in the affected areas, helping to stabilise the situation as normalcy gradually returns.
