Benin Court Remands Man Over Assault on BEDC Staff

A Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Benin City has ordered the remand of one Oghomwentiti Best Uwagboe over the alleged assault of a staff member of BEDC Electricity Plc during an official assignment.

The court, located in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, took the decision after the suspect was brought before it following his arrest by the police.

According to reports, the incident occurred when a female BEDC official, whose name was not disclosed, visited the suspect’s residence to carry out her duties.

During the visit, Uwagboe allegedly became aggressive, assaulted the official, and damaged her phone.

In an attempt to escape the situation, the staff member reportedly fell and sustained injuries. She was immediately taken to a hospital for treatment.

The matter was subsequently reported to the police, leading to the suspect’s arrest and arraignment in court.

Uwagboe, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him.

Although the Chief Magistrate granted him bail, he was ordered to be remanded in prison custody pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions.

The case has been adjourned until March 31, 2026, for further hearing.

Meanwhile, the Regional Head of BEDC for the Benin South Region, Henry Onovwaka, warned that the company is taking the incident seriously and may pursue civil action over the damages caused, as a deterrent against attacks on its staff.
