Kano Court Sentences Man to Death for Robbery Killing

A Kano State High Court has handed down a death sentence to Abdulaziz Umar for his role in the killing of Mubarak Salisu during a robbery incident in Kano.

The judgment was delivered on Monday by Justice Zuwaira Yusuf, who held that the prosecution had established its case beyond reasonable doubt. The court found the defendant guilty on all charges and convicted him accordingly.

The case stemmed from an incident that occurred on October 1, 2020, at about 6:00 p.m. in the Race Course area of Badawa, Kano. During the attack, the victim was robbed of a Samsung phone valued at N100,000 and fatally stabbed.

Abdulaziz Umar was charged alongside several accomplices identified as Muyi, Umar Sarki, Diga, Ashosho, and Taduke, all of whom remain at large.

In the course of the trial, the prosecution, led by Aisha Salisu of the Kano State Ministry of Justice, presented four witnesses whose testimonies linked the defendant to the crime. The defence counsel, Ya’u Abdullahi Umar, called only the accused person to testify.

According to the charges presented before the court:

“The defendant and his accomplices conspired to rob the victim, carried out the robbery using a knife, and caused his death by stabbing him, with the knowledge that such action could result in fatal consequences.”

After reviewing the evidence, the court found Umar guilty of criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, culpable homicide punishable by death, and brigandage under the provisions of the Kano State Penal Code Law.

Justice Yusuf subsequently sentenced the defendant to death by hanging in accordance with the law.
