Amotekun Confirms Attack on Osun Command, Firearms Stolen

The Osun State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun, has confirmed a violent attack on its Egbedore Local Government Command headquarters in Awo.

The agency disclosed that the incident, which occurred on Monday evening, left several of its personnel injured and led to the theft of firearms.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the spokesperson of the agency, Yusuf Idowu Abass, described the incident as a coordinated mob assault that caused significant damage to the facility and its operational equipment.

According to the statement, “preliminary reports revealed the situation began at about 8:00 p.m. when a civilian reportedly fled to the Amotekun office seeking refuge after being chased by suspected hoodlums.

“The victim was said to have been involved in a disagreement linked to a football-related altercation the previous day, which allegedly escalated into a violent confrontation.”

The agency said eyewitnesses reported that the attackers, armed with machetes and other dangerous weapons, chased and assaulted the individual before he managed to reach the security post.

Amotekun operatives on duty were said to have intervened and provided protection to the victim, preventing further harm at the time.

However, the situation escalated when the assailants regrouped and returned in larger numbers, launching a more intense attack on the command headquarters.

“During the assault, the mob vandalised the facility, injured personnel, breached security, and allegedly attacked the victim again while inside the premises.

“The attackers also reportedly carted away firearms belonging to the command before security operatives were able to repel them and restore order,” the statement added.

The agency confirmed that five suspects were arrested at the scene and have since been handed over to the police for further investigation.

It also called on residents to remain calm and support security agencies with useful information that could help in tracking down other suspects involved in the attack.
