The Adamawa State Government has ordered the destruction of over 70 cattle at the Jimeta Modern Abattoir after they were found to have grazed on potentially toxic vegetation.
The directive was announced by the Commissioner for Livestock and Aquaculture Development, Alhaji Salihu Idris, during an inspection of the facility in Jimeta.
According to him, the decision was taken to prevent contaminated meat from entering the food chain and to protect public health. Residents were also advised to buy meat only from approved slaughterhouses.
The commissioner noted that the action followed instructions from Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who approved the measure as a precaution.
Further investigations are underway, with samples of the suspected toxic grass to be analysed at Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital.
Officials say the issue was detected through routine monitoring, prompting swift intervention to avoid any health risks.
