Nigerian singer Tems has shared her perspective on marriage, emphasizing that it should be approached as a path to personal growth rather than being driven solely by emotions.
Speaking in a recent interview with media personality Angie Martinez, the Grammy-winning artist explained that marriage is not always smooth and requires a realistic mindset.
Tems noted that because of the challenges that can arise in marriage, she values having a partner who is God-fearing, as it brings a sense of accountability into the relationship.
“My partner has to be a God-fearing man. Because why would you truly love me if you don’t have anyone that you answer to? If you’re not accountable to anyone, how could you choose to love and keep loving me for the rest of our lives?
“If you’re the god of your life, why would you love me forever? You could just discard me anytime you want. But marriage is something that makes you better as a human being. It should. It shouldn’t be about only love, it’s about compatibility. It’s about whether a relationship makes you a better person, like it evolves you. Because marriage is a whole another level, it’s supposed to bring out the hard times,” she stated.
She added that beyond love, compatibility and personal development are key factors that should define a successful marriage.
