Nigerian Men Fear Confident Women – Phyna

Reality TV star Josephine Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, has shared her perspective on why she remains single, pointing to how confidence and independence can sometimes be misunderstood in relationships.

Speaking during a recent livestream on Twitch, the former Big Brother Naija champion reflected on her experiences and observations about dating dynamics, particularly within Nigeria.

Phyna suggested that many men are more comfortable with partners they feel they can influence or guide, which, in her view, creates a disadvantage for women who are outspoken, self-aware, and assertive.

She added that women who confidently express themselves, especially online are often judged prematurely, with assumptions formed before any real interaction takes place.

For someone like her, who embraces openness and authenticity, this perception can lead to hesitation or avoidance from potential partners. Still, she emphasized that she sees no reason to suppress her personality or become less expressive just to fit into traditional expectations.

Reaffirming her stance, she spoke candidly about how she views herself and the reactions she receives.

“I am a ten over ten. The thing is just that men are scared of bold and confident women. There are someone women that by mere looking at them you know that you can’t control them. But our Nigerian men like women that they can control.

“They don’t want women who have says or are exposed. So, we that are very loud about how we are, even without they meeting us, they are already scared and forming assumptions. But I really don’t care,” she expressed.
