Lewandowski Explains Why He Stopped Taking Barcelona Penalties

Robert Lewandowski, striker for FC Barcelona, has opened up on why he no longer takes penalty kicks for the team.

The Polish forward explained that he stepped away from penalty duties this season because he does not feel fully confident or in rhythm, largely due to limited playing time.

As a result, younger teammates like Lamine Yamal and Raphinha have taken over penalty responsibilities under manager Hansi Flick.

Lewandowski, who has been highly reliable from the spot throughout his career, scoring 89 out of 101 penalties has still faced challenges this season, missing two spot-kicks against Sevilla FC and Atlético Madrid.

Despite that, the 37-year-old continues to deliver solid performances, registering 16 goals and three assists in 37 appearances across all competitions.

However, his involvement has been somewhat limited. Since December, he has started only five LaLiga matches and has played around 1,950 minutes in total.

Explaining his decision, Lewandowski noted that reduced game time can affect a player’s confidence in crucial moments like penalties. He suggested that players who feel sharper and more confident during matches are often better suited to take such responsibilities.

He also clarified that his decision was not influenced by the penalties he missed, but rather by his lack of consistent time on the pitch.

The striker has also dealt with injury setbacks this season, missing five matches due to issues including a muscle problem and a broken cheekbone.
