FIFA has approved several rule adjustments that will be introduced ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
The 2026 tournament will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and it will feature 48 teams instead of the traditional 32.
The changes are aimed at speeding up matches and improving the accuracy of officiating decisions.
Here are the four new rules:
Substitutions: When a player is substituted, he must leave the pitch within 10 seconds. If he fails to do so, his replacement will have to wait one minute before being allowed to enter the field.
Throw-ins: Players must restart play with a throw-in within five seconds. If they take longer than that, possession will be awarded to the opposing team.
Medical treatment: A player who receives treatment on the field will be required to stay off the pitch for one minute before returning to play.
VAR: Decisions involving second yellow cards and corner kicks can now be reviewed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) if there is a clear and obvious error.
