Former lawmaker, Shehu Sani, has voiced his apprehension regarding the dwindling influence of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), characterizing the once dominant political entity as a mere shadow of its former self.
Sani conveyed this sentiment in a post on his X handle, reacting to the increasing defections and internal turmoil currently plaguing the party.
According to him, the PDP, which once proudly proclaimed itself as “the biggest party in Africa,” has experienced a dramatic decline from its previous prominence.
“The once powerful PDP acclaimed to be ‘the biggest party’ in Africa that produced three presidents and thrust powerful people into positions of authority is now deserted,” he said.
He further suggested that there are crucial lessons to be gleaned from the party’s current predicament and what he termed its “fatal decline.”
Sani also proposed that political scientists should conduct what he described as an “autopsy” on the PDP to pinpoint the root causes of its downfall.
“The mighty ship is sinking and most of the passengers have jumped out,” he stated, raising questions about whether the party’s troubles stemmed from internal miscalculations, external assaults, or other political factors.
“Was the PDP ship hit by a missile, or was it overloaded, or was it the miscalculations of the captains, or the stormy weather?” he queried.
His comments emerge amidst a flurry of defections and ongoing internal disagreements within the party, which continue to fuel anxieties about the PDP’s future as the 2027 elections approach.
