Osun 2026: INEC Boosts Inclusion for PWD Voters

The Independent National Electoral Commission in Osun State has reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive elections, with a focus on increasing participation among Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) ahead of the 2026 governorship poll scheduled for August 15.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mutiu Agboke, made this known during a sensitisation programme held in Osogbo. The event centred on expanding the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise to ward levels across the state.

Agboke emphasised that inclusion remains vital to strengthening democracy, stressing the importance of ensuring that all eligible voters can take part in the electoral process.

“Democracy thrives when every citizen, regardless of physical condition, has equal opportunity to participate in choosing leaders and shaping governance.”

He explained that decentralising voter registration would make the process more accessible, especially for individuals facing mobility challenges.

According to him, “the initiative would enable first-time voters who have attained the age of 18 to register easily, while also allowing previously registered voters to transfer or update their details without travelling long distances.”

To further support inclusivity, INEC plans to deploy assistive tools such as Braille ballot guides, magnifying glasses, and large-print materials, alongside priority voting arrangements for PWDs.

Other stakeholders also welcomed the initiative. The Osun State Director of the National Orientation Agency, Adebiyi Adefarasin Stephen, described it as timely.

“Persons with disabilities are an important part of our society, and their full participation in the electoral process must be encouraged and supported.”

Similarly, the chairman of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities in Osun, Steven Oluwakemi, commended INEC’s efforts while calling for sustained improvements.

“Inclusion is not a privilege but a right, and we are ready to partner with INEC to build a barrier-free democracy for all residents of Osun State.”
