A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River State, Soni Abang, has come to the defence of Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the recent rise in fuel prices, attributing the development to global economic conditions rather than domestic policy decisions.
Abang made the remarks while addressing party supporters at a mega endorsement rally held at the Ikom Township Stadium on Saturday.
He argued that international factors, such as geopolitical tensions and fluctuations in global crude oil markets, have played a major role in driving up the cost of petroleum products.
“Is Tinubu the one who started the crisis in Iran? These are global issues affecting economies around the world. Even at that, fuel prices in Nigeria remain relatively competitive,” he said.
He maintained that it would be unfair to hold the current administration solely responsible for the situation, noting that the government inherited a fragile economic structure and has since initiated reforms to stabilise the country’s finances.
“This current administration inherited a fragile economy. But the President has now embarked on reforms aimed at stabilising the fiscal outlook of our country,” he added.
According to Abang, policy decisions such as the removal of fuel subsidy—while difficult—are necessary steps toward repositioning the economy for sustainable growth.
He also suggested that the earlier surge in food prices, partly linked to rising fuel costs, is beginning to ease, pointing to what he described as the impact of government interventions.
“Food prices are coming down daily. The earlier spike was manipulated by opposition elements to create panic, but the situation is improving,” he said.
Abang further highlighted ongoing infrastructure development across the country, including major road projects, as evidence of the administration’s commitment to national growth and development.
He urged Nigerians to remain patient and supportive, expressing confidence that the current reforms would eventually translate into tangible economic benefits.
The rally, which attracted a large turnout of party supporters, also featured endorsements for President Tinubu and Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, ahead of future electoral contests.
