Akpabio Criticises Peter Obi Over Party Defection Moves

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has criticised the political moves of Peter Obi, raising concerns about party loyalty after the 2023 general election.

Akpabio made the remarks on Tuesday while commissioning a new NRS building, where he took aim at politicians who leave their parties after gaining significant electoral backing.

He argued that such decisions weaken party structures and threaten political stability.

“Somebody will go and get up to six million votes in the last presidential election through a political party and yet abandon that party and the six million votes to start shopping for a new party that he will go and start building up.

“I’m not talking about Soludo. I’m talking about somebody around his area,” Akpabio said.

Although he did not mention a name directly, the remarks have been widely interpreted as referring to Obi, who secured over six million votes in the 2023 presidential poll.

Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, contested under the Labour Party during the election but is now seeking a presidential ticket on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
