U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a major escalation in tensions with Iran, ordering a naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz following the collapse of diplomatic talks.
Speaking on Sunday, Trump said the directive would take effect immediately, with the U.S. Navy instructed to prevent all vessels from entering or leaving the vital shipping route.
“Effective immediately, the United States Navy will begin the process of blockading any and all ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz,” he said.
The president also ordered U.S. forces to intercept ships that have reportedly paid Iran for safe passage through the strait.
“Seek and interdict every vessel in international waters that has paid a toll to Iran,” he ordered.
Trump further revealed plans to remove underwater threats, stating that U.S. forces would begin “destroying the mines the Iranians laid in the straits.”
He issued a direct warning to Iran, stating, “Any Iranian who fires at us, or at peaceful vessels, will be blown to hell!”
Reports indicate that some vessels have been paying fees in Chinese yuan to secure safe passage, with analysts describing Iran’s approach as a checkpoint-style system requiring approval and escort.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes, making the situation a major concern for global markets. The decision follows failed negotiations between U.S. and Iranian officials in Pakistan.
