Peter Obi Raises Concern Over Street Children Abuse in Cross River

Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has expressed concern over reports of abuse involving street children in Cross River State, describing the situation as a sign of deeper social issues that need urgent attention.

His reaction follows reports and images showing young boys, popularly referred to as “Skolombo children,” being restrained and subjected to harsh treatment, sparking widespread concern about their welfare.

In a statement on Wednesday, Obi said the development highlights the need for stronger child protection systems and a more responsible societal approach.

“These reports are deeply troubling and underscore the need for us to do more to protect the children of our nation,” he said.

He noted that many children living on the streets are often victims of neglect and hardship, stressing that they deserve support through education and social programmes rather than stigma.

Obi also pointed to the growing number of out-of-school children in Nigeria, describing it as a serious issue with long-term consequences for the country’s development.

He called for a more humane and structured response, urging authorities to prioritise child protection, education, and rehabilitation for vulnerable children.

“We must move from neglect to responsibility and ensure that every child is given an opportunity for a better future,” he added.

Obi further emphasized that the issue is not limited to Cross River State, calling on stakeholders across the country to work together to safeguard the wellbeing and future of children.
