Otti Orders Investigation into Trader Harassment

Alex Otti has directed security agencies to launch a full investigation into alleged harassment, illegal sealing of warehouses, and extortion of traders and shippers in Abia State.

The governor gave the directive on Thursday while receiving members of the Abia State Shippers Association, led by its Board of Trustees Chairman, Olo Onuma, at his office.

Reacting to the complaints, Otti expressed concern over the reported activities, noting that it was the first time such issues were formally brought to his attention.

“There is a government here. Any man who shows up in a warehouse and wants to break in or seal it illegally must be reported immediately,” the governor stated.

“The matter must be thoroughly investigated, and all those involved must be arrested and made to face the provisions of the law,” he added.

He emphasised that his administration remains committed to maintaining law and order, warning that extortion, self-help, and any form of illegality capable of undermining economic activities and public trust would not be tolerated.

Governor Otti reassured the association of his government’s resolve to protect businesses and create a safe environment for trade and investment in the state.

On infrastructure, he spoke about the proposed Abia Inland Dry Port project, describing it as strategic to the state’s economic development but stressing that it must be economically viable to attract patronage and ensure sustainability.

Speaking on behalf of the shippers, Onuma commended the governor for his developmental strides but alleged that some hoodlums, in collaboration with certain government officials, were harassing traders, including artisans, fabric dealers, and shoe and bag makers.

He urged the government to take urgent action to curb the activities and restore confidence among business operators.

The governor reiterated that his administration would continue to act in the best interest of the people, ensuring that those found culpable are brought to justice while strengthening the business environment across Abia State.
