The Ogun State Government has provided an update on the recent flooding experienced along the Iperu-Ilishan Road, offering clarity on the causes and outlining steps being taken to prevent a recurrence.
In a statement shared in April 2026 through its official communication channels, the government explained that initial assessments identified multiple factors behind the flooding incident. One of the key issues was the positioning of certain structures—particularly a shop in Iperu Town—below the current road level, which made the area more susceptible to water accumulation during rainfall.
Authorities also highlighted the role of blocked drainage systems along the corridor. According to the statement, heaps of laterite left behind from previous construction activities had obstructed the free movement of stormwater, significantly reducing the efficiency of the drainage channels.
Additionally, the volume of rainfall recorded at the time contributed to the severity of the flooding, compounding the impact of the already compromised drainage system.
“The flooding recorded at a tiller-seller’s shop in Iperu Town occurred largely because the structure is situated below the current road level,” the statement read.
In response to the situation, Governor Dapo Abiodun directed the immediate deployment of relevant equipment to the affected area to clear drainage pathways and remove all blockages.
The government confirmed that intervention efforts have already begun, with workers mobilised to clear sand and laterite deposits from the drainage channels. It also noted that more equipment is being brought in to speed up the cleanup process and ensure proper water flow is restored.
Encouragingly, officials reported that floodwaters have since subsided, allowing normal movement along the road to resume.
However, residents have been cautioned against improper waste disposal, particularly the practice of dumping refuse into drainage systems, as it can obstruct water flow and trigger future flooding incidents.
The government reiterated its ongoing commitment to maintaining road infrastructure and strengthening drainage networks across vulnerable areas to reduce the risk of similar occurrences in the future.
