Ogun Govt Urges Compliance with Updated Building Regulations

The Ogun State Government has urged professionals in the built environment to comply with newly updated planning and building regulations to improve safety and urban order.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Olatunji Odunlami, gave the directive at a two-day workshop in Abeokuta for accredited consulting firms and industry stakeholders.

He noted that poor compliance with existing regulations has slowed the processing of planning permits, leading to project delays and increased costs.

Odunlami explained that the state’s regulatory framework, originally introduced in 2022, has now been updated in 2025 alongside a new Building and Construction Code to reflect evolving development realities.

He expressed concern that many professionals are either unaware of the updated rules or do not fully understand them, resulting in substandard submissions such as incomplete designs and weak technical reports.

The workshop, he said, aims to bridge that gap by fostering collaboration between regulators and practitioners.

The commissioner reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration to sustainable urban development and improved regulatory efficiency.

He also clarified that accreditation of consulting firms is a statutory requirement meant to streamline coordination and maintain proper records, not a duplication of professional licensing.
