New Lagos CP Issues Strong Warning on Extortion

The newly appointed Commissioner of Police for Lagos State, Fatai Tijani, has issued a strong warning against extortion and misconduct within the force, pledging strict action against any officer found culpable.

Tijani, who assumed office on Thursday as the 42nd Commissioner of Police in Lagos, addressed officers on Friday at the Officers’ Mess in Ikeja. During his remarks, he outlined a vision centered on discipline, professionalism, and community-oriented policing.

He made it clear that no officer would be allowed to unlawfully demand or collect money from members of the public, stressing that violators would face severe consequences. According to him, “Any officer caught in that web will be dealt with ruthlessly.”

The commissioner also called on residents to report cases of extortion or bribery, assuring that such complaints would be thoroughly investigated and that outcomes would be made public. He emphasized that all cases must be treated fairly and resolved based on their merits, either through prosecution or appropriate dispute resolution methods, without coercion or illegal charges.

Tijani highlighted the importance of humility and integrity in modern policing, noting that officers are meant to serve the public rather than exert dominance over them. He warned that when police act as though they are above the citizens, public trust and respect are eroded.

“When police see themselves as lords over the citizens, we lose the respect and trust of the people.

“Our job is to serve with integrity,” Tijani said.

Reinforcing his stance, he described ethical behavior and transparency as essential standards that officers must uphold to gain public confidence.

On security measures, Tijani revealed plans to boost visible policing by deploying officers to key locations as a proactive deterrent to crime. He explained that a strong police presence can discourage criminal activity, as offenders are less likely to act when they know law enforcement is nearby.

He also announced the revival of convoy patrols across various area commands, supported by government-provided vehicles, to ensure officers remain active and responsive within their communities.

In addition, the commissioner outlined intensified efforts to combat crimes such as cultism, land grabbing, and other illegal activities. He disclosed plans for daily raids in known criminal hotspots and targeted operations against identified groups.

“These activities will no longer be tolerated. Our officers will be fully committed to enforcing the law,” he said.

Tijani further cautioned against the misuse of police authority in handling civil disputes, stressing that such matters should not be turned into criminal cases or exploited for financial gain.

He encouraged the public to speak up against any form of misconduct, whether involving police personnel, task force members, or officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA). He assured that all reports would be taken seriously and that those found guilty would face appropriate disciplinary measures.

The police chief concluded by urging officers to embrace discipline, dedication, and a service-driven approach, making it clear that extortion and abuse of power would not be tolerated under his leadership.
