The Plateau State chapter of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has raised alarm over what it describes as persistent attacks on Fulani herders, warning that continued poisoning and killing of cattle in rural communities could provoke serious consequences.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the association’s chairman, Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, accused groups he referred to as “Berom Militias” of being behind a series of incidents targeting herders, particularly in Barkin Ladi and Riyom local government areas.
According to the group, the frequency of such attacks has reached a critical level, with affected communities increasingly frustrated and considering measures to defend their livelihoods.
Babayo referenced a recent incident in Rakum community in Barkin Ladi, where nine cows were allegedly killed on April 18. He described the episode as deeply troubling and unnecessary, noting that the affected herders were engaged in their normal activities at the time.
“The Plateau State Chapter of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN strongly condemns the senseless and unfortunate killing of nine (9) cows belonging to innocent herders by suspected Berom youths in Rakum community of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area,” the statement said.
He warned that such actions have the potential to heighten tensions in already sensitive areas and could undermine efforts aimed at maintaining peace between communities.
“MACBAN views this incident as a deliberate provocation and a serious threat to peaceful coexistence among communities in Plateau State. The destruction of livelihood, particularly through the killing of livestock, is not only inhumane but also economically damaging to already vulnerable pastoral families,” he said.
While expressing concern over the situation, the association called on security agencies to take immediate steps to investigate the incident thoroughly, identify those responsible, and bring them to justice without delay.
At the same time, Babayo appealed for calm among affected groups, urging community leaders, youth organisations, and other stakeholders to resist the urge to retaliate.
“We also urge community leaders, youth groups, and all stakeholders in Barkin Ladi LGA to exercise restraint and avoid any form of retaliation. Violence will only deepen mistrust and prolong the cycle of conflict.
“MACBAN remains committed to peace, dialogue, and lawful engagement in addressing grievances. We appeal to the Plateau State Government and relevant authorities to take proactive measures to protect lives and property, and to prevent further occurrences of such incidents. Let it be clearly stated that peaceful coexistence is the only sustainable path forward for all communities in the state,” he added.
The association maintained that lasting peace in Plateau State will depend on accountability, mutual understanding, and consistent efforts to protect both lives and livelihoods across all communities.
