Rainstorm Destroys Over 20 Homes in Plateau Community

A powerful rainstorm has left widespread destruction in Nghassi community, Mandar Ward of Bokkos Local Government Area in Plateau State, damaging more than 20 homes and several farmlands while displacing numerous residents.

The storm struck at about 5 p.m. on Tuesday, bringing heavy rainfall and strong winds that tore off rooftops, uprooted trees and damaged buildings and other property estimated to be worth millions of naira.

Community member Bulus Ritji said the impact of the storm was severe, forcing many affected families to seek temporary refuge after losing their homes and belongings.

“The destruction is enormous. More than 20 houses were affected, and many families have been displaced,” Ritji stated.

He added, “Although no lives were lost, many victims lost their homes, food items, clothing and other valuables, leaving them in distress.

“The people are now homeless and urgently need support from the government, humanitarian organisations and well-meaning individuals.

“Farmlands and other means of livelihood were also destroyed by the storm, worsening the plight of affected residents and forcing many families to seek temporary shelter with neighbours and relatives.”

Also reacting, Bokkos Youth Leader Christopher Luka appealed for urgent intervention from government agencies and humanitarian organisations.

“I appeal to the Plateau State Government, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Plateau State Emergency Management Agency (PLASEMA), humanitarian organisations and other well-meaning Nigerians to urgently provide relief materials, temporary shelter and other assistance to the victims.”

He stressed that “timely intervention would help cushion the hardship faced by the displaced families.”

Meanwhile, the Executive Secretary of the Plateau State Emergency Management Agency (PLASEMA), Mr. Sunday Abdu, said the agency had not yet received an official report of the incident.

“The incident has not been reported to our office. But we will find out about it,” he said.
