Lagos Trains Teachers on AI and Digital Education

The Lagos State Government has emphasised the importance of responsible technology use in schools following a three-day training on digital pedagogy and artificial intelligence for senior secondary school teachers.

The programme, organised by the Lagos State Teaching Service Commission, brought together selected teachers from across the state’s six education districts and the Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board (LASTVEB).

Held between April 8 and April 10, 2026, the training focused on equipping educators with modern teaching tools and strategies to improve classroom delivery and student outcomes.

Speaking at the opening, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Tolani Ali-Balogun, described the initiative as timely, noting that rapid technological advancement is reshaping the education sector. He urged teachers to adopt digital tools, AI, and problem-solving approaches in their teaching.

The government said the initiative aligns with the education and technology pillar of Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus Agenda.

Chairman of TESCOM, Victoria Mopelola Peregrino, said the programme represents a shift toward learner-centred education and aims to inspire creativity and innovation among teachers.

“To all the participants here today, remember that you are agents of change. I challenge you therefore not to allow the knowledge and skills you will acquire here to end in this room; cascade it to your colleagues and downlines. Let it have a ripple effect through your classrooms, your schools and your communities. You have the power to shape a generation that is not only digitally literate but also adaptable, ethical, and forward-thinking.”

“With this training, you will have the opportunity to critically examine and explore different types of digital pedagogy and Artificial Intelligence that can be used in the classroom and address practical concerns about its usage. But let me emphasise that AI is not a replacement for teachers, but a support system to strengthen your effectiveness in the classroom. Your role as educators remains central and irreplaceable,” she added.
