Kano Govt Demolishes Illegal Structures in Sharada

The Kano State Government has intensified the enforcement of urban planning regulations, carrying out another demolition exercise to remove illegal structures within the city.

Officials from the Kano State Ministry of Land and Physical Planning led the operation on Monday at Sharada Ja’en. The demolition exercise was personally supervised by the Commissioner for Land and Physical Planning, Abduljabbar Muhammad Umar.

According to the state government, the action followed reports that certain individuals had secretly constructed commercial buildings on land belonging to the Federal Housing Authority (FHA).

Speaking with journalists after the operation, the commissioner emphasized that any future development on the land must strictly comply with the regulations set by the Kano State Urban Planning and Development Authority (KNUPDA).

“The land is designated for recreational and leisure purposes, not commercial activities,” Abduljabbar Muhammad Umar said.

“The state government has now taken over the oversight of the land to ensure proper usage, and any structure to be erected must meet the approved KNUPDA guidelines.”

Umar explained that the demolition targeted buildings erected without official approval on government-owned land and other public spaces. He noted that such developments often create challenges for proper urban planning and infrastructure development.

The commissioner also warned that authorities would continue to monitor different parts of the city and take decisive action against individuals who violate land-use regulations.

He said the demolition exercise forms part of the Kano State Government’s broader urban renewal and land management initiative, aimed at cleaning up the city, safeguarding public land, and ensuring that all developments comply with approved zoning and planning regulations.

Some stakeholders welcomed the move, saying it reflects the commitment of the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to enforcing planning laws and promoting orderly development across Kano.

The ministry further stated that similar enforcement operations would continue in other parts of the city to curb illegal construction and protect government-owned land.
