The people of Hadejia in Jigawa State are set to commemorate a significant chapter in their history with a two-day event dedicated to remembering their resistance against colonial forces.
The commemoration, scheduled to take place from April 24 to 25 in Hadejia town, was announced by the Chairman of the Organising Committee and Galadiman Hadejia, Usman Abdul’aziz, during a press conference.
According to Abdul’aziz, the purpose of the event goes beyond remembrance. It is intended to instill courage in younger generations, reinforce cultural values, and preserve the rich heritage of the Hadejia people.
The historical significance of the event dates back to a confrontation in 1906, during which more than 800 Hadejia warriors lost their lives.
Among those killed was the then emir, Muhammad Mai Shahada. The clash also resulted in casualties on the side of the British forces, including their commanding officer.
To mark the occasion, a range of activities has been planned. These include guided tours of important historical locations associated with the event, providing participants with a deeper understanding of the community’s past.
A key highlight of the commemoration will be the unveiling of a historical publication that offers a detailed account of the 1906 encounter.
The book was authored by the late Haruna Wakili in collaboration with other historians, and is expected to serve as an important resource for preserving the narrative.
