The Federal Government of Nigeria has summoned South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner following reports of attacks targeting Nigerians and their businesses in South Africa.
According to the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the envoy has been invited to a meeting scheduled for Monday, May 4, 2026, in Abuja. The meeting is expected to serve as a platform for Nigeria to formally express its concerns over the recent developments.
The government’s action comes in response to reports that protests in South Africa have escalated into incidents of harassment, violence, and the destruction of properties belonging to foreign nationals, including Nigerians.
Officials are expected to engage the South African representative on the reported mistreatment of Nigerian citizens, as well as the broader impact on their businesses and livelihoods.
While acknowledging the rising tension, the Nigerian government has urged its citizens in South Africa to remain calm. It also reassured them that the situation is being handled through diplomatic channels and reiterated its commitment to protecting Nigerians abroad.
The latest development brings back memories of previous episodes of xenophobic violence in South Africa, which have, at various times, strained diplomatic relations between both countries.
Despite these recurring challenges, Nigeria and South Africa continue to maintain significant economic and political ties. However, incidents involving foreign nationals have periodically tested the strength of that relationship.
The outcome of the planned meeting is expected to play a key role in easing tensions and reinforcing diplomatic engagement between Nigeria and South Africa.
