The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Cross River State, Innocent Tommy Etuk, has warned motorists especially commercial drivers to avoid reckless driving and strictly adhere to traffic regulations.
Etuk issued the warning during a sensitisation campaign held in motor parks across the state ahead of the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations and the expected surge in travel activities.
He urged drivers to always prioritise safety, emphasizing that human life cannot be replaced.
“There is no supermarket where human life or body parts can be bought and replaced,” he said.
As part of the campaign, FRSC officials carried out alcohol tests on drivers before departure, cautioning that anyone found above the allowed limit would not be permitted to travel.
“In such cases, passengers will be transferred to another vehicle to ensure their safety,” he added, noting that alcohol affects judgment and increases the likelihood of accidents.
The sector commander also cautioned against overloading, describing it as a leading cause of road crashes, and revealed that special patrol teams have been deployed to ensure compliance and apprehend offenders.
He further advised passengers to take an active role in ensuring their safety by discouraging unsafe driving and reporting erring drivers through designated emergency channels.
“Passengers must be alert. If a driver is overspeeding or driving dangerously, caution him or report appropriately,” he said.
A driver, Usen Bassey, noted that continuous sensitisation would help reduce road accidents, while also urging the government to address poor road conditions.
