The Benue State Police Command has launched a Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) as part of a strategic effort to address rising cases of violent crime and insecurity across the state.
The announcement was made on Thursday in Makurdi through a statement issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Udeme Edet, who explained that the initiative forms part of ongoing reforms within the Nigeria Police Force.
According to Edet, the establishment of the specialised unit aligns with broader restructuring efforts being championed by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, aimed at improving operational efficiency and strengthening the effectiveness of security responses.
She noted that the reorganisation of the police tactical framework, including the creation of the VCRU, is intended to eliminate duplication of duties, enhance accountability, and promote a more disciplined, intelligence-led approach to policing.
The Commissioner of Police in Benue State, Ifeanyi Emenari, described the unit as a key component of the command’s strategy to improve coordination in tackling violent crimes and responding to emerging security threats.
He explained that the VCRU will function as a centralised response team for emergency and high-risk incidents, enabling faster deployment of officers and more efficient use of operational resources.
Emenari also emphasised the importance of professionalism, noting that officers assigned to the unit are expected to uphold high standards of conduct and respect for human rights in the course of their duties.
He said, “As part of the rollout, selected officers have commenced an intensive training programme focused on modern policing techniques, ethical conduct, and tactical response.
“The training is expected to enhance their readiness to respond effectively to security challenges within the state.”
The police command further reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, while calling on residents to support security agencies by providing timely and credible information.
The introduction of the VCRU reflects a broader push to strengthen internal capacity within the police force and improve its ability to respond effectively to evolving security challenges in Benue State.
