Traders Raise Alarm as Adigba Market Burns in Benue

Residents and traders in Sai and Abagi communities in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area have raised concerns after the Adigba Market, a newly established community market, was reportedly set on fire over the weekend.

Eyewitnesses claimed that individuals suspected to be members of the armed forces carried out the attack, destroying several stalls and goods belonging to traders.

Adigba Market, situated between Sai and Abako communities in Katsina-Ala LGA, was recently inaugurated by the council chairman, Justin Shaku, as part of efforts to support local trade and provide a safer environment for business activities.

Residents explained that tension started late Friday night when armed personnel reportedly entered the market area during what was described as a routine patrol.

According to eyewitness accounts, the soldiers arrived in three Hilux vans along with several motorcycles while traders and youths had gathered at the market to watch a football match.

“They flashed torchlight around the market and searched the area but did not find anything before leaving,” a resident said.

However, at about 4 am the following morning, the armed men allegedly returned and set the entire market on fire.

A trader who spoke about the incident said many shop owners have been left devastated by the destruction.

“We were watching the Chelsea match here at night when they came with vehicles and bikes.

“They checked around and left. But around 4 am, they came back and burnt the whole market,” the witness recounted.

Attempts to get confirmation from the spokesperson of the Benue State Police Command, Udeme Edet, were unsuccessful as of the time this report was filed.
