A late-night armed robbery incident targeting student hostels near Ekiti State University in Ado Ekiti has resulted in the arrest of two suspects, with security operatives intensifying efforts to capture other members of the gang who remain at large.
The attack took place in the early hours of Saturday in the Iworoko area, a community known for housing a large number of off-campus students.
Armed individuals reportedly invaded several hostels, dispossessing students of personal belongings and raising fresh concerns about safety in student residential areas.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ekiti State Command, Sunday Abutu, said the police received a distress call around 2:30 a.m., prompting an immediate response from officers attached to the Iworoko Police Division.
According to Abutu, victims reported that the suspects forcefully gained access to their hostels and carted away valuables, including mobile phones.
He explained that operatives quickly mobilised and tracked the suspects to their hideout shortly after the incident, leading to the arrest of two individuals, while other members of the gang managed to escape.
The arrested suspects were identified as Abdulraman Abdulmumini, 26, and Abdulsalam Oseni, 31.
Items recovered from them include an unregistered Bajaj motorcycle believed to have been used during the operation, two stolen mobile phones, two MP digital radios, as well as clothing and footwear suspected to belong to the victims.
Abutu further disclosed that the suspects have confessed during interrogation and have provided useful information about other gang members who are still on the run.
He added that the police have intensified efforts to track down the fleeing suspects and recover additional stolen items linked to the robbery.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Ekiti State, Michael Falade, has called on residents to support security agencies by providing timely and credible information that could aid ongoing investigations.
