The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the arrest and detention of one of its officers following allegations of extortion involving a motorist in the Idimu area of Lagos State.
The development comes in response to a widely circulated video in which the motorist detailed his encounter with the officer. According to the account, the driver was stopped despite possessing complete and valid vehicle documentation.
The motorist alleged that the officer raised an issue regarding the colour of the vehicle, insisting that it was “grey” rather than “ash” as indicated in the official registration documents. The situation reportedly escalated when the officer threatened to arrest the driver and demanded a payment of N30,000, which was later reduced to N10,000.
Reacting to the incident, the police issued a statement via its official X platform confirming that the officer involved had been identified and taken into custody.
“UPDATE: The officer seen in the viral video as posted by #epiccycl has been identified, arrested, detained and queried. The #LagosPoliceNG will provide full outcome of the investigation as soon as possible.”
The Force further indicated that the officer is currently undergoing internal disciplinary procedures. It assured the public that the findings of the investigation will be disclosed once the review process is concluded.
