The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has announced the death of Oreoluwa Emmanuel Adewole, a Part IV student in the College of Health Sciences, describing the incident as sudden and deeply distressing.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the university’s spokesperson, Abiodun Olarewaju, the student passed away during an academic activity.
The management disclosed that the incident occurred “during a clinical viva examination when the student reportedly complained of chest pain.”
Olarewaju explained that the situation was treated as an emergency, with lecturers and fellow medical students present immediately stepping in to provide assistance.
However, despite the prompt response and efforts to revive him, the outcome was unsuccessful.
“Sadly passed on. This tragic loss has sent shockwaves through the university community.”
The news has generated widespread grief across the institution, particularly within the College of Health Sciences, where the deceased was a student.
In response, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Simeon Bamire, on behalf of the Governing Council, Senate, staff, and students, extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased.
He also sympathised with the student’s colleagues, friends, and the wider academic community affected by the loss.
The university further stated that it is engaging with relevant authorities and the bereaved family to provide necessary support, while also seeking to better understand the circumstances surrounding the incident.
