NRC Arrests Railway Vandal in Lagos

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has arrested a suspected railway vandal in Lagos as part of efforts to curb damage to rail infrastructure.

The suspect, Bashiru Hafeez, 32, was apprehended by security personnel during a routine patrol at Mobolaji Johnson Train Station in Ebute-Metta. He was found in possession of 15 pandrol clips metal fasteners used to secure rail tracks allegedly removed from the Alagomeji section of the narrow gauge corridor.

“These components are critical to track stability, and their removal poses serious safety risks, including the potential for derailment,” the statement said.

Officials warned that tampering with such materials could endanger train operations and passenger safety. The suspect was subsequently handed over to the railway police for investigation.

He has since been arraigned before a court in Lagos and remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre, with the case adjourned to April 24, 2026.

The Managing Director of NRC, Kayode Opeifa, reiterated the agency’s zero tolerance for vandalism, praising security personnel for their swift response.

“Anyone found culpable in vandalizing railway infrastructure or dealing in stolen railway materials will face the full weight of the law,” he said.

The Corporation also urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, stressing the importance of protecting railway assets and maintaining safe operations.
