Lagos Police Probe Viral Video Alleging Task Force Extortion

The Lagos State Police Command has started an investigation into a viral video that accuses officers from the Lagos State Task Force, reportedly led by CSP Adetayo Akerele, of illegally seizing cars and making up traffic offenses to extort money from drivers.

The video, which began spreading quickly on Saturday, seems to show what the narrator calls the officers’ alleged tactics.

According to the claims in the recording, a task force member allegedly took over a driver’s car and intentionally moved it onto a one-way street to make it look like the driver had broken traffic laws before asking for money.

In the video, a man’s voice claimed he was pressured into paying N150,000 to keep his vehicle from being impounded.

He also alleged that other drivers frequently pay similar sums to avoid more legal trouble.

Responding to the situation, the Lagos State Police Command acknowledged the viral video in a post on its official X account.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh ordered a thorough and fast investigation into the claims.

“The attention of the Lagos State Police Command has been drawn to the video currently circulating online.
“The Commissioner of Police has ordered an immediate investigation into the matter.

“The Command appreciates members of the public for bringing this to our attention and assures that appropriate action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation,” the statement said.
