A 47-year-old man identified as Temitope Elegbede has been brought before a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Badagry, Lagos State, over allegations of assaulting his landlady.
The defendant, whose residential address was not disclosed in court, is currently facing charges bordering on assault and behaviour capable of disturbing public peace. He has denied the allegations and entered a not guilty plea.
During proceedings, the prosecutor, ASP Edet Ekpo, informed the court that the alleged incident took place on April 7 at approximately 9:20 a.m. along Panusa Ajobuwe Street in the Ilogbo area of Badagry.
He told the court that the defendant allegedly attacked his landlady, identified as Oluwabunmi Otokiti, by grabbing her by the neck within her home. The prosecutor further stated that the defendant’s actions were likely to cause a breach of peace in the community.
“The defendant was later arrested and handed over to Police for prosecution,” he said
The charges filed against Elegbede are said to contravene Sections 168 and 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
Presiding over the case, Chief Magistrate Nurudeen Layeni granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000, with a requirement that he provide sureties in the same amount. The court also stipulated that at least one of the sureties must be a recognised community leader.
The matter has been adjourned until May 14 for mention, as the legal process continues.
