Gunmen Kill 26 in Jos Night Attack, Police Confirm

Police have confirmed that 26 people were killed in a Sunday night attack on Angwan Rukuba, a community in Jos North LGA of Plateau State.

The state’s Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah, also disclosed that three others sustained injuries during the incident. He spoke while Governor Caleb Mutfwang visited the community to sympathize with affected families.

Gunmen reportedly stormed the area in a coordinated attack, leaving several residents dead and others wounded.

Describing the incident as tragic, the police chief assured that those responsible would be apprehended.

Providing further details, Ciroma Samson of the Plateau Youth Council said the attack occurred around 7:30 p.m., adding that about 10 gunmen arrived in a Sharon bus and opened fire on unsuspecting residents.

“These are just innocent people who have done no wrong, but their lives were sniffed by the enemies of the land.

“But our government can do better; it is quite unfortunate that criminal elements will unleash this mayhem within an urban community and go unhindered.

“Government should deploy technology and other modern means to support the efforts of the security agencies in addressing the security challenges in the state,” he said.

Samson also urged the government to support the victims’ families, noting that many of those killed were breadwinners.

Following the governor’s visit, the bodies of the victims were moved to the mortuary.
