Doctor Kidnapped in Niger as Police Launch Rescue Operation

The Nigeria Police Force in Niger State has confirmed the abduction of a senior medical practitioner, Tony Eghagagara, in Borgu Local Government Area, sparking renewed concerns over security in the region.

Dr Eghagagara, who serves as Head of Medical Services at General Hospital, New Bussa, was reportedly kidnapped by suspected bandits on Wednesday night at about 9:30 p.m. The incident occurred at his private hospital located in Wawa community.

Confirming the development, the command’s spokesperson, Wasiu Abiodun, said security agencies have already begun operations aimed at rescuing the victim and apprehending those responsible.

According to him, a police tactical team has been deployed to the affected area to track the abductors and ensure the doctor’s safe return.

“The command has mobilised a tactical team for the rescue operation, and further developments will be communicated in due course,” Abiodun stated.

The incident has intensified concerns about the safety of healthcare professionals, particularly in rural communities where insecurity has continued to disrupt daily life.

Residents have increasingly voiced fears over the vulnerability of essential service providers, warning that such attacks could further strain access to healthcare services in already underserved areas.

Authorities, however, have reassured the public that efforts are ongoing to secure the victim’s release and restore calm in the community.
